St. Vitus Dance - Glypotheque

‘Glypotheque is the second recording by St Vitus Dance. The fact that it makes its appearance a full twenty years after its predecessor, ‘Love Me, Love My Dogma’ may take a little explaining…

In 1987, the Belfast based St Vitus Dance signed to Liverpool indie label Probe Plus. Love me,Love My Dogma’, was released in June of that year to universal acclaim from the music press. The band, emboldened, promptly abandoned what paltry gainful employment they had been engaged in and shifted base to Liverpool soon after.

Just over a year later, a combination of homesickness and crippling penury led to the band’s (entirely amicable) disintegration .

Then at the start of 2005, band members were approached by the organisers of Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter Festival with a view to playing a one off show in May of that year. They began writing and rehearsing songs that have come together on GLYPOTHEQUE.

The songs on GLYPOTHEQUE reflect the passing of time since the release of the band’s debut album. While the band’s mastery of melody and Noel Burke’s love of language remain intact, this is no attempt to recreate past glories for the nostalgia set.

Quotes:

“Where silence is sometimes necessary, there’s still room for celebration in music. And this music has heart, humour and hope.” MELODY MAKER

“Blatant slices of pop pleasure…. There are at least 5 songs on this record that cry out for immediate single release.” HOT PRESS

“This is an album to tug at the strings of your heart and wallet.” LIVERPOOL DAILY POST

Glypotheque will be available on Probe plus from April

Calvin Party - Godard's Girlfriend

'GODARD’S GIRLFRIEND’ is a record that is cramped full of melody. It might be a moody cantankerous melody, a melody that retains the abrasiveness and edge so important to the bands’ early recordings, but it is a melody that will nag away at you, and ultimately draw you into this record.

'The greatest undiscovered band” John Peel, BBC Radio 1
